Borrowing Limits and Renewals

How Long Can You Borrow Things?

East Gwillimbury Public Library is officially Fine Free and no longer charges overdue fines on any EGPL items borrowed by library card holders. However, items still maintain due dates and should be returned on time so that other people in the community can enjoy them.

How do Renewals Work?

The Library currently has automatic renewals, so if your item does not have any holds and is eligible for renewals you will receive a notification four days before the due date that we have automatically renewed your item. Once your items have been renewed to the renewal limit they will then be due.

Does the Library have fines?

We currently do not charge overdue fines for EGPL items, however there are a few fines still present for library items:

Item Replacement Fee (Cost Varies)

If an item is 8 weeks overdue or has been damaged beyond simple repair, it will be considered lost and the borrower will receive a bill for the replacement of the item, as well as a non-refundable processing fee.

If a lost item is returned in good condition to the library within six months of being lost, the replacement fee can be refunded.

Interlibrary Loan Overdues ($0.25/day)

EGPL is fine free but many of our neighbouring libraries are not. When we borrow items from other library systems through the Interlibrary Loan program, we are responsible for the safe return of those items. Overdue Interlibrary Loan items will be charged $0.25 per day in overdue fees.

If you have an Interlibrary Loan that you wish to keep beyond its due date, please contact your local branch.

I have an item coming due but I may need it longer!

Part of our job at the library is to provide exceptional experiences. If you need a little more time with an item, please reach out to your local library staff by phone, email, social media, or our contact page. We'll be happy to help in any way we can.

Where can I drop off my books?

Books can be returned at any of the following locations but any Library of Things item, including hotspots and Chromebooks, must be returned to the front desk at one of our branches.

  • Drop boxes outside of each branch
  • The front desk of any library in East Gwillimbury
  • The Library Lockers at the EG Sports Complex
